I recently downloaded NotebookLM and tried the ChatBot function for the first time. The clarity of the explanations and the effectiveness in supporting memory retention were truly impressive. I greatly appreciated the learning experience.
However, I noticed that in the generated dialogue, the role of the questioner was assigned to a female voice, while the explainer was assigned to a male voice. This stereotypical gender role allocation felt uncomfortable and raised concerns about reinforcing unconscious gender bias.
I strongly encourage the development of an interface that either allows users to customize the gender of the speakers, or that generates a more balanced conversation—such as a mutual discussion format where both parties deepen their understanding together.
NotebookLM has great educational potential. For that reason, I hope it continues to grow as a tool that actively avoids reinforcing gender stereotypes and instead embraces diversity and equity.
