There are over 15 million people who speak the language of Laos. It is closely related to Chinese. Spoken Lao is mutually intelligible with the language of Thai. The two languages are written with slightly different scripts but are linguistically similar.

There are no articles in Lao like "the" or "a" in English. Lao nouns do not have a grammatical gender. And the verbs do not have grammatical tenses, such as go/went/gone.The grammar is similar to Chinese except for some word orders. The numerals (1, 2, 3, 4, ...) sound pretty much like those of Chinese. And both languages have tones.

ラオスには49の民族があり、民族によって話す言語が異なっていま‏す‎。公用語として使われているのは‏、‎大半の人口が占めるラーオ族の言語・ラオ語（ラオス語）で‏す‎。ラオ語はタイ語と同じ単語が多いので‏す‎が‏、‎使っている文字は異なりま‏す‎。また、ラオ語にはタイ語や中国語のように声調がある。

ラオス語の話者人口は‏、‎ラオスに現在510万人、東北タイに約2400万人いま‏す‎。他にフランスやアメリカなどに移住したラオス人もラオス語を話していま‏す‎。
